The 21.2-kilometre-long metro rail line between Uttara and Kamalapur, officially known as Mass Rapid Transit Line 6, is scheduled to run commercially on the Uttara–Agargaon route from December. The reasons include inclusion of new components during construction of the rail line between Motijheel and Kamalapur and modification of rolling stocks, increase in costs for extra land acquisition and consultancy services. The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited in its proposal showed five reasons in support of its proposed revision to the project. It will be costlier by over Tk 3,000 crore than the Padma Multipurpose Bridge, the construction cost of which finally stood at Tk 30,193.33 crore after several rounds of cost hikes. The Metro Rail Project is being implemented with the financial and technical assistance from Japan in a bid to ease the city’s traffic system. The proposal is likely to be reviewed by the executive committee of National Economic Council in a meeting on Tuesday. In a proposal to the planning commission in June, the implementing agency also sought an extension of the project tenure to December 2025 from the current deadline of June 2024. The cost of elevated Metro Rail Project is likely to go up by a whopping 52.24 per cent while its tenure by one and a half years.Īccording to the planning ministry officials, the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited under the road transport and highways division sought an escalation of the much-vaunted project cost to Tk 33,471.99 crore from Tk 21,985.07 crore.
